San Fransisco, CA
The challenge of this residential remodel was to renovate an existing 1500 SF, two-story, stucco home with an existing dark and congested basement, and create a more contemporary home, with more living space, a seismic upgrade, and a connection between the upstairs and downstairs main living areas. The remodel entailed rebuilding the ground floor level, opening up the first floor plane and putting in a spiral staircase - transforming the quality of light and the flow of spaces within this 1926 San Francisco home. EndreStudio's design provided a light-filled, sinuous connection between the two levels. The newly designed spiral staircase is composed of cascading “torsion” boxes – a sequence of twisting wooden steps with an unsupported edge. The stair's twisting form and use of natural materials bring warmth and energy to the home's lower level. Refined detailing and finger-jointed jatoba wood complement the client’s interest in carpentry and joinery and brings with it a new level of elegance and beauty to the home.
