CATALPA RESIDENCE

Mill Valley, CA

Status: Completed in 2002

Architect: EndresWare (Endrestudio)
Engineer: EndresWare (Endrestudio)
Schematic Design: Maya Tuve

The design brings to life a cinematographer's vision of a home nestled in the foothills of Mount Tamalpais with the beauty of a panoramic view, the warmth of the sun soaked masonry, the possibilities and seismic performance of delicately expressed steel and the comfort and familiarity of handcrafted wood detailing. Glu-lam stair treads appear to float, cantilevered from one of the seismic steel braces set flush with the wall. Above this staircase stainless steel tension rods define the extents of the lightwell allowing views from the office to the mountains beyond. Set against a mahogany ceiling, the T-shaped steel purlins project through the clerestories forming the handrail and deck above. The disparate natures of the existing CMU and the new steel structure are made whole by the consistent and refined use of wood detailing seen in the cedar eaves and siding, the built in cabinetry and tinted cement radiant heated floors with wood inlay.
