As part of an invitation-only competition with entries from noteworthy designers such as Cecil Balmond, Buro Happold, RFR, SOM, ARUP, Schlaich Bergermann and others, Endrestudio's proposal advanced to the final round with a modern design that honors Providence’s rich maritime history while offering a new icon for the evolving riverfront. The bridge towers recall the masts of historic ships in the harbor. Beneath, red fired clay vaults, furnished by local craftsmen, serve as both formwork and finish. The peaking oscillations of the clay tiles reflect the rippling waves of the river below.
