As one crosses the wood bridge made from a carefully salvaged tree, doubly cantilevered roof planes are revealed that seem to go on forever. The planes hover over a continuous clerestory of glass and open up the space to the band of sky beyond. At every turn the residence, on a bluff overlooking the St Helena Valley, is more than meets the eye. Stair treads appear to be supported by the edge of a glass wall, but a closer look reveals the plane is floating. A 700 foot long tunnel houses a wine cellar and geothermal equipment. Another stair’s treads are supported by a 2 inch thick, 30 foot high sheet of steel cantilevered from the ground and filling, but not touching, its light well. Strong forms and bold lines are softened by a palette of stone and wood in a house that responds to the material nature of the wooded site.
