Serpent Mother Sculpture

Black Rock City, NV

Status: Completed 2009

Artists: The Flaming Lotus Girls
Structural Engineer: Endrestudio

This highly interactive 168 foot long steel sculpture by the Flaming Lotus Girls was completed in 2006 for the Burning Man Project. The skeletal serpent featured a large, fully kinetic skull and a long body that coils around to protect a copper shell egg. Bio-diesel flames are controlled by computerized buttons which audience members can push to illuminate the top of the Serpent Mother's vertebrae. Her teeth are lit from within and her underbelly is lit by LED lights. The ten foot tall operable copper egg opens and ejects bright flames colored by liquid methanol.
